Cleaning and Repairing Your Watch – Part 1
Watches are elegant pieces of technical marvels in which each little part is carefully crafted and carefully fitted into its little home inside the casing of the watch. Certified watchmakers are some of the most skilled engineers of our time as they have to be very calm and patient making and placing the intricate parts that make up the watch. Many people like to do this as just a hobby because of the skill and information you have to learn can be quite difficult. Here are a few things to consider when looking to clean or take apart your own watch.
Before you go and just start ripping apart your watch, there are a few things you must be aware of. The first and maybe most important thing you need to begin is a clean and very well lit work station. Whether you have a desk or work bench, the area must be free of clutter and you must be able to see all of the little parts that make up a watch very easily.
A jeweler’s bench or watchmaker’s bench is a softer bench that ensures that the tiny pieces comprised of the watch won’t bounce and roll off the table as you work on it. No matter what, just make sure that the work area is flat and has some kind of fluorescent lighting so you can see clearly.
You are not going to be able to use any old set of screwdrivers you have laying around the house. If you plan on doing this as a hobby and want to get real good with you skills, a set of watchmaker’s screwdrivers are an absolute must have. This way you are sure to find the right size of screwdriver to fit the job at hand and the screwdrivers themselves won’t strip and ruin easily.
As you work and take apart the watch, you are going to have a ton of tiny little pieces that you are going to need to place so they don’t get lost or accidentally thrown onto the floor. They make tiny little parts trays for you to store all of these parts. Fishing tackle boxes work nice or anything that you can label and organize the parts as you disassemble and assemble your watches.
A few other things you will need are tweezers and supplies to clean the pieces of the watch. Any old tweezers should do but you want to make sure that they are easy to hold and are comfortable in your hand. The cleaning pieces are a bit more complicated and may cost you some money. Do a search on the internet for a watch cleaner with solution.
Stay tuned for the second addition of what you will need to clean and repair watches.
